Education Pathways
Youth video
Multiple
Education Pathways are particularly important to young people in our
community. Students talk frankly about why having education pathways
that are outside of traditional high schools are so important and
how these options have made a difference in their lives. The
students refer to two existing pathways, Scavo Alternative School
and Future Pathways, a credit recovery program offered by Des Moines
Public Schools.
Who We Are At Scavo, courses are offered in a flexible, non-traditional format. This means that classes are offered in a block format of one and one-half hour increments with students being able to select from ten block times. Students attend classes daily. Mondays, Wednesday and Friday students will go to their “A” classes, Tuesdays and Thursdays students will go to their “B” classes. Classes are also smaller which promotes interaction between students and staff. Courses may be started and completed at any time during the school year. Thus, credits can be earned any time during the school year. In addition, students may earn credit for work experience through the New Horizons program. High school staff facilitate students in earning the necessary credits to qualify for a diploma from Scavo Campus; to return to a comprehensive high school if the student elects to transfer; or to earn a high school diploma through the Future Pathways program.
