The mission of Hoover High School is to provide quality educational opportunities within a safe, caring, environment where all students can develop the basic, critical and creative thinking skills necessary for productive lives.

Herbert Hoover High School was opened in the fall of 1967 and was named after our 31st president of the United States. He was born on August 10th, 1874 in West Branch, Iowa. He gained prominence in several careers - engineering, international relief work, government, and politics. Herbert Hoover is probably best known for his term as president, during which the Great Depression of the 1930's began. He died at the age of 90 in New York City on October 20, 1964.

Hoover High School is located in Des Moines, Iowa which is a center of industrial, retail, insurance, small business, and agribusiness activity. Five high schools (Hoover, East, Lincoln, Roosevelt and North) and two alternative high schools serve a population of 250,000, along with a Central Campus for technical/vocational training and additional academic offerings.

  • Teaching and learning require a healthy, safe and orderly environment.

  • Resources and services are essential for effective instruction.

  • All staff must continue to learn, and all schools must continue to improve.

    Citizens who write to the district should be aware that their letters could be open for examination and copying by others under the Iowa Public Records Law
