Students
in Des Moines will have the opportunity to complete a college degree
at the same time they receive their high school diploma, thanks to a
joint venture between Des Moines Public Schools and the Des Moines Area
Community College.
The new DMPS-DMACC
initiative means many courses offered at Central Campus, along with
all five Des Moines high schools, will help students complete an Associate
of Arts degree. Central Campus is home to Central Academy, the Career
& Technical Institute, and the World Languages programs, all of
which will be offering courses that provide credit towards an AA Degree.
For students
completing a degree from DMACC while attending high school, there are
no tuition costs and all courses can be taken through Des Moines Public
Schools during regular school day hours.
Offering college
credit through DMACC first started at Central Campus in 1998 and has
since been offered throughout all of the high schools in Des Moines.
During the past ten years, Central Campus students have earned 62,756
college credits at a cost savings to their parents approaching five
million dollars. Advanced Placement and, starting in August, International
Baccalaureate classes also provide Des Moines students with the opportunity
to earn college-level credit.
In order to be
able to now offer the AA Degree, teachers at Central Campus completed
additional professional development in order to be certified as adjunct
instructors at the community college level.
A course catalog
has been developed by DMPS and DMACC to serve as a guide for students
in the completion of an AA degree. The catalog lists the DMACC credit
courses and the high school where each course is offered.
Students may
earn the degree by completing courses at their comprehensive high school
and Central Campus. The AA Degree requires students to take core area
courses and electives bringing value to all courses approved for college
credit. Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA on all course work that applies
to the AA Degree.
For students
planning to complete their bachelors degree, DMACC has articulation
agreements with Drake University, Grand View College, Iowa State University,
University of Iowa, and the University of Northern Iowa.
For additional
information regarding this opportunity, students and parents can download
the course catalog here or contact the DMACC advisor at their home school.
